How many hours a day do you spend inside? Most American spend up to 90 percent of their time indoors rather than out. The problem? Indoor air quality can be far worse than what you would breathe in an average American city. Finding ways to improve indoor air quality needs to be a priority.
- Use natural cleaners and other household products as much as possible. The chemicals used in many household cleaners emit toxic fumes into the air, especially when emitted from spray bottles. Pesticides are another course of pollutants in the air.
- Avoid volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs have been linked to cancer and may cause damage to human internal organs such as the liver and kidneys. VOCs are found in paints, strippers, many cleaning and building supplies, and even permanent markers.
- Get more fresh air into the house. Most modern homes are built with a tight envelope to make the home as efficient as possible. That said, it has reduced indoor air quality in homes without proper ventilation. Use the exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms to pull stale air out. If weather permits, open up the house to get rid of the trapped air occasionally.
- Perform a radon test. Radon odorless, flavorless radioactive gas emitted from the ground. It’s the second leading cause of lung cancer, right behind smoking. If you find that your home has radon, you can install a system that traps and exhausts it before it gets into your house.
- Clean the house regularly. Dust, pollen and other pollutants settle on your furniture and floors. Vacuuming, dusting and mopping help remove those pollutants from the house and improve air quality.
- Consider adding an air cleaner to your HVAC system. Such a cleaner will remove extremely small particulates from the air without compromising the air flow in the home.
