History of Houston, TX

The city of Houston was named in honor of Sam Houston by the Allen brothers, a pair of entrepreneurs from New York who purchased more than 6,600 acres with the plan to found a city. The city was incorporated in 1837 and became the Harrisburg County seat the same year. Early commercial and railroad activity surrounded cotton growth and export. The city also played an important role as a point for organization related to the Battle of Galveston during the Civil War.

The deep-water Port of Houston became an interest after a hurricane caused significant damage in Galveston at the turn of the century.
