History
Once a winter hunting ground for members of the Karankawa tribe, Katy welcomed its first permanent settlers during the early 1870s. Thanks to the fertile, well-watered prairies that surrounded it, Katy quickly grew into an agricultural center that produced rice, corn, dairy products and other important items. During the early 20th century, the discovery of ample oil reserves in the surrounding region sparked the Texas oil boom and created tremendous opportunity for local residents. By the end of the century, Katy had grown into a major exurb of Houston. It continues to grow at a rapid clip to this day.
Geography
Katy is located on the western edge of the Houston metropolitan area. Sitting at the intersection of Fort Bend, Waller and Harris Counties, it’s about 30 miles due west of downtown Houston and 10 to 15 miles northwest of nearby Sugar Land. Thanks to its virtually unchecked growth, the area enjoys robust access to transportation thoroughfares like Interstate 10 and Texas Highway 99. Although much of Katy has been developed with suburban-style subdivisions and commercial nodes, the lands to the west and south remain covered with fertile grasslands and pine groves.

Climate and Weather
Katy is known for a humid, mild climate that produces ample amounts of rainfall and plenty of muggy weather. The area’s low elevation and proximity to the Gulf Coast keeps its winters mild and generally ice-free. However, frozen precipitation occasionally causes problems for drivers on untreated roads. During the spring and fall, clashing air masses give rise to thunderstorm activity that can produce hail, high winds and even tornadoes. Tropical storm activity increases during the late summer, but direct hits on Katy are rare.
