Local History & Geography
Founded in the late 19th century, Pearland’s development into a modern city was largely driven by a new rail line built through the area in 1882. Originally called Mark Belt when the first post office was established in 1893, the city’s name was changed to Pearland in that same year due to the many pear trees located throughout the area. Businesses and hotels thrived in the city until a devastating hurricane hit in 1900 and slowed growth. Today, Pearland is a popular Houston suburb that has grown nearly 200 percent since 2000.
Pearland is situated just 20 minutes from Downtown Houston, making the community a perfect choice for young professionals who are eager to start careers and families. While most of the city lies in Brazoria County, some newer areas are also located in Harris and Fort Bend counties. State Highway 288, FM 518, State Highway 35 and the Sam Houston Tollway connect residents to Houston and the surrounding communities.
The Area’s Residents
Pearland is home to nearly 97,000 residents and is considered the fastest-growing city in the region. Many of the area’s residents are small families headed by professionals who commute into the greater Houston area. Thanks to Pearland’s prime location, the average daily commute time for residents is a short 30 minutes. While the city is primarily residential, some small firms have opened in the area in the last decade.
Attractions, Diversions & Things to See
A fast growing but welcoming city, Pearland boasts plenty to keep residents and visitors alike occupied. History buffs will find an array of historical buildings and sites throughout Pearland and the surrounding areas. Among the most popular are the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad Depot and the Old Settlers’ Cemetery. Those who are interested in modern architecture with an exotic feel can head to the Sri Meenakshi Temple, which hosts special events and offers spiritual programs for those interested in Hinduism.
Local Weather & Climate Conditions
Like much of the greater Houston area, Pearland enjoys temperate winters but sees hot summer temperatures with high humidity levels. Home and business owners in the area rely on air conditioning service professionals to ensure their comfort when conditions outside are less than pleasant. Visitors who aren’t accustomed to summers in the area should stay hydrated and avoid going outdoors during the early afternoon.
